The Digital Product Passport (DPP) will become mandatory in several industries due to the growing focus on sustainability, circular economy principles, and the need for transparent supply chains. DPPs are digital records that contain detailed information about product materials, manufacturing processes, carbon footprint, and lifecycle, which can be accessed via technologies like QR codes.

Current DPP-IT Applications by Industry

Batteries

Reason: With the rise of renewable energy storage and electric vehicles, batteries play a key role in reducing carbon emissions. However, they contain valuable but sometimes dangerous materials (like cobalt, lithium, and nickel). The EU Battery Regulation mandates the use of digital passports for all batteries to ensure responsible sourcing, lifecycle management, and recycling.

Electronics

Reason: Electronic products have complex supply chains involving materials like rare metals, plastics, and toxic substances that can harm the environment. DPPs will help track these materials, ensuring proper recycling and waste disposal. The EU Circular Electronics initiative encourages this transparency to reduce e-waste.

Automotive Industry

Reason: Electric and traditional vehicles use materials like lithium (for batteries) and plastics, which need to be effectively recycled. DPPs enable tracking of components and encourage remanufacturing, reuse, and recycling, which is key to the EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP) for the automotive industry.

Container

Reason: Plastic pollution is a major environmental issue. Companies in the packaging industry will need to use DPPs to track the materials used, their recyclability, and their environmental impact, promoting sustainable and eco-friendly packaging options worldwide. This encourages waste reduction and a transition to a circular economy.

Textiles

Reason: The textile industry faces significant pressure to reduce waste, environmental impact, and improve working conditions. DPPs can provide information on materials used, their origin, and production conditions, promoting sustainable sourcing and transparency to consumers.

Building Materials

Reason: The construction industry is responsible for significant resource exploitation and waste. DPPs will track materials such as concrete, steel, and wood to ensure sustainability in sourcing, reuse, and waste disposal, in line with the EU Sustainable Products Initiative (SPI), reducing environmental impact.

Toys

Reason: Discarded toys contribute to ecological hazards such as microplastics and greenhouse gas emissions. 90% of toys are made of plastic, and 80% of those end up in landfills, incinerators, or oceans. DPPs help improve the circularity of the industry by providing recycling and safety information, reducing the number of unsafe toys on the market.

Plastic

Reason: In 2022, 400.3 million metric tons of plastic were produced, with a high CO2 emission rate. DPPs help track carbon dioxide emissions during plastic production and enable companies to identify high-emission processes. Regulations for all plastic products will be adopted through a delegated act of the ESPR between 2027 and 2030.
